The actual vote for independence took place two days on July 2, 1776. John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.”
However, the official adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress happened on July 4, 1776, and that date became our official Independence Day.
