That Was Then

That was then
and now it’s over
all that was is gone for good—
the honey days and stinking clovers
drifted by as well they should.

Time trickles slowly now
forming spikes
and stalactites
in that frozen cave
you call your heart.

That was then
and now its over
there is no more time
for me to brood—
all that was is gone forever—
that was then
and now it’s heaven.

The Betrayal

The betrayal was sudden
swift and jarring—
it ripped my guts
and tore my heart to shreds.

For a long while I thought the holes
will never heal—
the magic of life
turned into meaningless moments
and no event however joyful
lived up to the memories
of a life now dimly recalled.

And then one day I realized
it was up to me
to stop the pain
and I turned my mind
in other directions—
over time the sting softened
and I was able to breathe—
mind over matter
hour by hour
I started to feel alive

Sundays at The Cove

On Sundays we walk to the Cove
down a sandy trail
covered with wildflowers
all the way to the ocean —

We sit on the bench at the edge of the cliff
and watch the sinking sun
fill the air with velvet orange glow
as it quietly reflects in the still water
basking in the beauty of her own light.

And then my heart quivers with yearning
with deep longing sighs —
wishing this moment would last forever.

When Death Lands Upon Our Shores

When death lands upon our shores
in early foggy morning
with sudden banging roars–
When death comes
and leaves a sight of blood and gore–
Who will sooth our hearts?
Who will make us soar?
Who will fill the hollow void?
Will we ever be the same?
Could we ever sing again?
Oh, how could we survive
this crushing
burning pain?

When Death Comes

When death comes knocking at the door
and leaves us sad and sobbing on the floor
few things remain to heal our hearts
faded photos
and pieces of your art–
and so you live forever more
in words crafted
with love
now stuffed inside a drawer.

Let’s take this broken world
and put it back together
we’ll glue the pieces with our love
to always make it better.

Let’s run away
just you and I
and climb above the hill
from where we’ll call
the earth to stop
and cleanse itself from ills.

Below us mountains will burn and smolder
in fumes of orange glow
and at the grand cross of Here and There
will throw a wish to sow.

Come run with me
and climb above the meadows,
come run with me and feel the air
wipe away our shadows.

I know that we can find a way
to heal our pain and that of others
if you and I stand side by side
a new world we’ll discover.

Above the hill
just you and I
will spread our arms wide
and then the air will swish about
to take us on a ride.

Around us poppies will blush in bloom
and fields will glisten white
and at the edge of Here To Come
will watch an awesome sight.

Come run with me
let’s find a way
to bring a better day
let’s run away
just you and I
and wipe away our shadows.

Morning Song

A little bird had come today
and sang me songs
here’s what she said:
“Come fly with me into the sky
come sing with me
and do not cry,
so many days are yet to come
so many things are left undone,
come fly
come live
come sing with me
be light
be happy
and be free!”

Tell me can you hear me
been callin’ you for hours
need you here with me
this world could be ours

Tell me can you hear me
been callin’ you for hours
need you here with me
this world could be ours

I’ve been callin’ for way too long
haven’t heard back so I wrote this song
To say I love you regardless
regardless of it all

Narrow minds and futile battles
shatter dreams that could have been
gone illusions of graceful living
seeking meaning in between

I can see clearly
stopped to smell the flowers
the sky’s lookin’ dreary
and the clouds bursting showers

You’ve been strayin’ for way too long
there is still time to right your wrongs
but I love you regardless
regardless of it all

Broken glass and tall closed gates
barefoot walking on hot sand
feeling endless wishes burning
and hopes that never end.

Walkin’ on a wire
riskin’ all that I got
just to get a lil’ higher
erryday I don’t stop
over vallies filled with fire
winds blow and rain drops
I’ll be walkin’ on this wire
all the way to the top

In the middle of my life
I found myself alone
walkin’ on a wire
my dreams carried me along
I held to every moment
with a tooth and nail
hoping to be strong
hoping not to fail
looking to the stars
to guide me through the dark
to give me but a clue
to light a little spark

In the middle of my life
I wanted all to end
and yet each day I woke
determined to ascend
I knew I must go on
I knew I should not quit
for this is but a course
in God’s prerequisite

I wrote the poem I recite on May 18, 1998. Twenty-one years have passed but despite the many advances our world is still in turmoil. I wonder why and will we ever wake up. — Kira
A note from Asaf:
The shooting at Chabad in Poway resonated deep inside me. Only four years ago, I was tied-up at gunpoint by three armed thugs when they robbed my studio. After staring down the barrel of a gun, knife to my throat, wondering if it will be my last moment—I am grateful to still be alive. However, horrific attacks like these rob us of our innocence and sense of security. This past Sabbath service at Chabad, these feelings struck home again. Instead of the typical cheerful sounds of children playing hoops outside, we were all inside guarded by heavily armed security. It was eerie. Just a few days before, we remembered the Holocaust and suddenly this was not just a chapter in history—it was a reality. Right here, in beautiful sunny southern California, in the Land of the Free, Jews were forced to be locked down in their house of worship. And I wondered Why?
The day after the robbery, I came back determined to rebuild my studio and not allow the incident to define my life—and I made it even better. This is the legacy of the Jewish people. Despite countless atrocities, we never gave up, and went on to rebuild our homeland into a beautiful thriving country. Still I wonder why—why are rockets falling? Why all the killings? Why are churches burning? Why are leaders not taking action? Why does the world not open its eyes? So many whys… There are no easy answers, but I still have faith that if we each take responsibility for our actions the pieces will fall into peace. “They shall turn their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they know war any more.” (Isaiah 2:4). — Asaf

Dedicated to my beloved brother Ehud Shimoni

I fly today to place unknown
from a past now long and gone
I fly away from where I’ve been
from all the things I know and seen
into the blue that lays out there
as high as prayers can ever dare.

In my dreams I saw
Your beacon illuminating in the dark
calling me to trust, to trust tomorrow
for I shall reach your holy ark
your 13th Sphere is here, so near

Above the crimson sun I fly
into the blue that is Your eye
still deeper into space–
where once upon we knew Your Grace.

As I fly and as I sail
beyond commotion and guttering gales
I see the wake that stretches on
before we cried in Babylon.

To the Garden where we played
before we knew of good and bad–
where we were happy and never sad
and sat together as One—unclad.

In my dreams I saw Your glory
a sight too awesome to recount
between the blackened cleaving hills
I saw Your temple on the mount
your 13th Sphere is here, so near

I fly to You to 13th Sphere
where all is crisp and very clear
where We will be at last in peace
and where my soul You’ll gently ease.

In my dreams I saw your heavens
open brightly through the skies
and my visions overtook me
that at once I wept a cry
Your 13th Sphere is here, so near

not again will ever find me
your selfishness is a disease.

to those who took
and then departed–
whomsoever did not love

WTF is a friend?
If he’s not real just pretend
WTF is a friend?
If he don;t fight til the end
WTF is a friend?
If he’ don’t give a fuck aboutcha ends

Early Morning

Early morning and all seems calm
but inside I feel an ache, a raging storm,
and there is no escape—
my soul has been sullied,
beaten n’ bent outta shape.

Once upon a time the world
was bright and happy
it gleamed with light
was blissful, golden and so snappy—
but in an instant all went wrong
and no, there’s no joy
not one happy song.

They say luck is spinning like a wheel
what was up—has turned on its heel—
and in the garden of my life
the flowers have dried up,
my spirit withered, shriveled
and so my spark was snuffed.

I hope the day will come
and we shall meet again—
and then my heart will heal
from this dark daughting pain.

And yet, despite the ills,
the sickness n’ malaise,
I feel You with me now
and every morning— always —
so do not be afraid,
I shall — I will survive—
cos’ there I see the sun rise
and now I feel alive.

Sometimes I Want

Sometimes I want to say something
but nothing comes to my head—
sometimes I want to say something
but I feel so empty and dead.

Sometimes I want to write something
but the words jumble instead—
everything sounds trite and so boring
like the tandem thoughts in my head.

Sometimes I miss a far distant illusion
of something I wish had occurred—
true love and eternal profusion
that would turn my pain hazy blurred.

But sometimes I sing ever so brightly
the birds in the sky stop to watch—
and they join me together so spritely
kicking my tunes up a notch.

And suddenly I see it all so clearly
and the world sparks again with aglow—
for I feel You as nearly above me
as the shadow of black crows on snow.

Happy Birthday

Happy New Year to all and Happy Birthday to my one n’ only son and BFF Asaf Fulks 🎂 May all your days be happy and bright. Keep your feet firmly on the ground and your mind in the 13th Sphere. I love you forever ❤❤❤

When I was young and you a lil’ baby
when you had just come out to see
the world around you, the good and crazy,
I did not know what was to be.

I wished that day
that we will play
and bask in light forever—
to live a life of gentle breeze
to love and laugh and savor.

So many years have passed since then
too many days for me to count
but in the glow of every sunset
I still remember the wish I sent.

Way Back Then

Way back then
when all was pure and simple
when summer days
were long as Neverland—
way back then
when tunes were rhymes and jingles
I used to wish that life will never end.

Way back then
I used to count the hours
and wished the night
will turn day again—
I longed for breezy
sudden autumn showers
and clouds that sailed
above the fertile plains.

I loved the freshness
of the early winter—
on days when snow
had fallen from the sky
and all had glistened white
with sparkly glitter
way back then before we said Goodbye.

Way back then
nothing seemed to bother
I felt alive and young
and so carefree—
I yearned for the spring
to bloom in all its colors
and whiffed each flower like a thirsty bee.

And now I look back
and I often wonder—
where have all those
marvel moments gone?
and then I hear
a distant clap of thunder
and once again I feel I am reborn.

Let the Truth

Let the truth cut through mountains
let it clear the thunderclouds
let the cord of honesty
ring inside you clear and loud.

Guard against a falsehood living
honor all you touch in life
most of all revere the glory
of a world without strife.

Know the night towards justice
becomes darkest before dawn
but in the Halls of the Almighty
falsehood dies and truth be shown.

Let His law cut through mountains
stand up tall before your Lord
know that you can never hide
if you have brought the world discord.

Autumn Morning

In the city of Angels
high above the trees
I awoke one autumn morning
to the sound of buzzing bees.

My room was sweet with orange scent
a tinge of Fall nipped chilled the air
and the sweep of sky above
held the deepest of my prayers.

Autumn morning flushed Fall colors
of a special blush–
and the blowing breeze caressed me
with a sudden rush.

In the city where the Angels
fly high and far below
with fading warmth of autumn
I basked in God’s soft glow.

In her dream one night she saw
fire on the hills
behind the moon the earth was burning
the air was full of chill.

She threw her head back in defiance
her neck stretched up and hard
her stare pierced the cloud of smoke
to see the land was chard.

She flew above the hills
beneath the earth grew red
she bowed her head with cry
her heart was full of dread.

She stood amidst the ashes
shackles on her soul
chained by time and sudden flashes
she bellowed out call.

Then she saw herself standing
by a gate so green
and when the doors open wide
she saw a sight unseen.

In her dreams one night she saw
herself wearing shrouds so white
and then her dream had turn dark
and dreary like the night.

likes to slide around the dunes
kickin’ sand and flyin’ kites
chasin’ bees before they bite.

Moody Mindy has gloomy times
and changes moods just on a dime
if she gets not what she wants
she kicks and screams
and broods and taunts.

But Moody Mindy most of all
likes to crunch dry leaves in Fall
to roast on fire and go on hikes
and sing old songs like lil’ tykes.

Upon Returning |

Upon returning
from my beautiful homeland
my soul collapsed in my heart,
in busy streets I walk alone
as deafening silence shoots darts.

I long for the warmth
of the place I was born,
and to sleep
with my Mom once again,
to get up in the morning
at dawn with the heavens
and to turn the abyss into glens.

So when I returned from
my sweet golden country,
I longed to dwell within YOU–
And if I ever forget you Oh, Yerushalayim
may my heart forever turn blue.

When Men Father Children

When men father children
then decide they’ve had enough
and leave to find their fortunes
while their children are scared and scruff.

Who will stay to find solutions
to the mounting sense of dread
of young children who are baffled
and are crying and are sad?

What kind of father is a man
who lives without remorse
of the pain he causes children
with his callousness of force?

What lessons does a father
teach to prime his only son
if he sets to hurt with purpose
and inflict harm on his own?

What examples do young girls
grasp from watching the only man
who is said to be their savior
if their mother he sets to maim?

What is in the message
of a man who lashes out
on his woman and her children
to abandon them without?

Who had given men the power
to bleed and cripple and extort
and to cause such wrenching grief
to the families that they abort?

Who will stay to clean the mess
and assure that sons abound,
don’t repeat their fathers’ follies
when their turn comes around?

Birthday – Part 4

Thus many birthdays came
some happy some with sorrow,
she saw her life move by
still wishing for new morrows.

This morning she woke up
to face a brand new day,
today she is Sixty five
and here is what she says:

I traveled through the years
to see so many changes,
despite the many tears
my heart with love still rages.

I stumbled and I fell
and got up to continue,
for life is but a tale of
many rings and venues.

The wishes that were given
so many years ago,
are dreams in which I live in
of hopes to reap and sow

Who knows what will come about
just around the bend,
there are so many routes
to reach the promised land.

With vigor in the heart
and hope for better morrows,
today is a brand new start
to fly above the laurels.

Collect the memories
and string them one by one,
then tie them in a wreath
and lay them in the sun.

The past is passed and gone
the future lays out there,
today is what we have
to be the most and share.

Today I am Sixty-five
my bushels are a flow,
today I am still alive
lets sing and dance and glow.

Birthday – Part 3

When she was four years old
her teacher gave a party,
the children wore twig wreaths
their song was plain but hardy.

They dance around the room
holding hand in hand,
the teacher and the mother
joined the happy band.

She stood amongst her peers
and thanked them shy with gleam,
they lifted her up high
to touch the rafts and beams.

Birthday – Part 2

When she was two year old
with white dress and a ribbon,
her hand she gave to hold
her legs still soft had jiggled.

The father held the child
and helped her take a step,
the tyke he swung up wild
with vigor and strong pep.

Later in the day
they came to be together,
the children sang and played
despite the stormy weather.

She was their little princess
her skin was soft and fair,
her hair a mess of ringlets
her stare was strong with dare.

They wished for her to grow
to be their pride and joy,
they gave her gifts and bows
and she was shy and coy.

Birthday – Part 1

When she was one year old
her mother tied a ribbon,
her head was small and bold
and kept on slightly bobbing.

The mother and her babe
stood in a field of rocks,
they squeezed their eyes and smiled
at a man with a picture box.

The mother young and pretty
looked forth with fortitude,
she held firm her baby
who cocked with attitude.

When evening came along
the family had gathered,
to sing a happy song
with wishes light as feathers.

The baby sat and played
with gifts that they had brought,
a horse and beads of clay
a treasure to be hold.

She cooed with childish smiles
no worry did she feel,
they looked at her beguiled
with love their fate they sealed.

Come hold my hand and walk with me
by the orange n’ lemon trees
hold my hand

Come see the beauty of the day

and purple flowers

Come sing the morning song with me
dance aloud and jump up free
see the glory

The Lonely Rose

Narrow minds and futile battles
shatter dreams that could have been
gone illusions of graceful living
seeking meaning in between.

Falling down and getting up
stumbling all along
to find a balance in a life
that lost its morning song.

Broken glass and tall closed gates
barefoot walking on hot sand
feeling endless wishes burning
and hopes that never end.

Longing for a peaceful respite
from a world that only knows
the price of every little thing
but doesn’t value a lonely rose.

On Mother’s Day

On Mother’s Day one Sunday morning
I woke up all alone,
a million mothers went to march
shouting out their scorn.

They called to stop the violence
demanding gun control,
they said our children would be safer
and society as a whole.

I sat alone–my kids were gone–
my thoughts wandered far away,
I pondered what would make a difference
the loss of kinder to keep at bay.

And so I thought:
The rage our children feel inside
would not be stopped by passing laws,
it is the tender loving care
that will further ease their blows.

It takes much more than shouting out
and protesting out in malls,
it takes a heap of care and tending
to save our children’s souls.

Society cannot be tamed
by passing rules and legislation,
the only way to save our system
is teach our children ’bout compassion.

It’s not enough to utter words,
it’s not enough to say we care,
it’s not enough to raise our banners
if kids are left to their despair.

It is the teaching in the home
the way parents give respect
and how they honor themselves n’ others
that show kids just how to act.

It is the constant concentration
the care and tending in every day
which parents give despite affliction–
to save a child from falling prey.

If babes are valued and respected,
if they receive their due esteem,
they will give back what they received
and yield beyond our wildest dreams.

For citizens of any land
can live together in peace and truce,
if early on they are self-governed
with bits of love, respect and truth.

I Dreamt You Were Here

I dreamt you were here
with me last night,
you covered my heart
with blankets so white,
and you laid next to me—
right here by my side,
humming a hymn of a childhood that died.

In morning I sensed
you were here in my room,
hand in hand we recounted
a life that had bloomed,
and secrets of days
that have passed and are gone—
the words that were whispered
made my skin crawl at dawn.

A gust of wind blew thru the window
and puffed the curtains apart–
and the burst tore my soul into limbo
and trembled the strings of my heart.

Tonight I felt you were here
right with me—
and you told me of new things
and places you’ve seen—
of a life everlasting
in the great green space
beyond the horizon and the blue universe.

It’s a Gray Day

It’s a gray day, gray day,
I want to sing, I want to play,
I want to swing, I want to sway,
I want to splash in ocean spray—
I do not need the sun or rays
to be happy, light and gay—
Oh, gray day, gray day,
stay awhile then slip away.

Monday Morning

Is this the morning light I see?
She whispered in her slumber
her head she curled into her knees
her hair a flare of amber.

Back to her dreams she wished to run
and reach beyond the heat of sun
to a place from which unfold
fantastic tales to live and hold.

Is this the morning air I feel?
She stirred under the covers
her body sensed the breeze of trees
her skin began to shiver.

In maze of time she longed to run
fancy free and full of fun
in dreams of days which roll in spools
in visions lovely–not so cruel.

Is this the morning song I hear?
she sunk back into the pillow
sweet strain of harp from Paradise
still quivered soft and mellow.

She wrapped herself into the sheet
the whiteness of the Heavens
and found herself close to a dream—
but now it was past seven.

MY PRIMAL CRY: Poems by Yakira Shimoni Fulks

MY PRIMAL CRY by Yakira Shimoni Fulks is a collection of poems portraying the wide gamut of emotions one may experience in modern society. The poems evoke a feeling of intimacy laced with mysticism and often incorporate elements of nature to contemplate the Divine. Kira surveys a host of themes from the peaks and valleys of relationships to challenges and faith. Her poems enlighten, inspire the reader with the potential to transcend time and place.

In the Sky

In the sky there was an eagle
flying high above the ground
and his shadow traveled westward
racing fast without a sound.

And the seagull over water
hovered silent in his track
as he watched his own reflection
sailing with him back to back.

Black old crows raved up their solo
and an owl sat and cooed
at the tip of one tall cypress
that rocked him gently as it could.

Humming birds brightly colored
quivered fast among the leaves
and the robins came to shelter
their baby young below the eaves.

In the sky there were so many
flying creatures of all kind
soaking up the evening sunshine
slowing down as they unwind.

And I stood there oh, so happy
wondering how it all began
when I felt YOU deep inside me
and knew that life will never end.

In the Middle of My Life

In the middle of my life
I found myself alone,
walking down the road
all my dreams were gone,
feeling numb inside
shocked into a shell,
wondering what to do
where to live or dwell.

Burdened by a past
that left me bruised and maimed,
I stumbled everyday
a purpose to regain,
to find another dream
to carry me along,
a hope, a wish or vision
to bring my heart a song.

Half way through my life
I wished to simply sleep,
to not awake again,
to never cry and weep,
to find a different world
in which there is no pain,
to let my soul find rest
and wash away the stain.

I held to every moment
with every tooth and nail,
trying to be strong,
hoping not to fail,
looking to the stars
to guide me through the dark,
to give me but a clue
and light a little spark.

In the middle of my life
I wanted all to end,
and yet each day I woke
in sorrow or disdain,
I knew I must go on,
I knew I should not quit—
for this is but a course
in God’s prerequisite.

Out of Nowhere

Out of nowhere in the middle of the night
came a great big thunder
and a great big light
it traveled fast down the mountain
chasing about
with fury and rage carving a route.

The light flashed bright the sky
and the sliver of moon
and the thunder rocked the flowers
that napped in their bloom
as the earth shook astounded
at the sudden assault
and all those who turned
became pillars of salt.

Out of nowhere in the middle of the night
when all was quiet
save for souls in their flight
the sky broke open and out of the dark
there appeared out of nowhere
a great bright arc.

It stretched up above reaching
further and higher
as it rooted itself in a puddle of fire
and it traveled across
the broadness of space
and anchored itself
on my head with such grace.

Ehud Shimoni King of Hollywood

Thank you all for the outpouring love for Ehud and our family. I felt the gigantic hug from around the world and it made me feel happy, in a bitter sweet sort of way. Happy that Ehud is remembered and loved, for as long as one is remembered he is alive. I went to my dentist in Hollywood today. It was a tough day all around, the drive, the drill and four years since I drove up the mountain to Ehud’s house to take him back home to another mountain in Jerusalem. I debated if to go up there today. As I approached downtown and saw the white sign sparkle in the bright blue sky with his house nestled in the hill below and I decided to keep the memory of him as he was, full of life and sparkles, the King of Hollywood. That’s how I remember him–and that’s where he will always be, at the top of the mountain–his blue eyes sparkling brightly over the City of Angeles over the rainbows in the far far Land of Lala✡❤💎

Cry For YouKira’s Art

Cry For You

It’s been 6 years since you left Ehud Shimoni–We miss you and love you!

It’s been so long since you’ve been gone
I feel so sad and so alone
The skies were blue and now are gray
I think of you each night each day

And all I wanna do is cry for you
And all I wanna do is cry
cry cry cry for you
Into my dreams you come along
I hear your sound I sing your song
When I wake from dreams of you–
I feel a pain I never knew

I feel you in my heart, I feel you
Where did you go to I miss you, I miss you
Why did you leave me alone?
Oh, where are you now oh, Oh I miss you,
I need you I want you,
I want you to please come home

The City lights had turned dim
The hills and stars no longer beam
Another day without you here
I feel alone and hold my tears
