Shabbat Shalom and Happy Shavuot to All 🌿
Today we celebrate Shavuot, the holiday of receiving the Torah, the moment a wandering and wondering people stood together at Mount Sinai and became a nation bound by covenant and faith.
Today I remember my grandfather, Rabbi Chacham Shalom Shimoni זצ״ל (1884–1977), whose yahrzeit was last week, כ״ו באייר.
Born in Duhok, Kurdistan, and orphaned at a young age, he became the grand rabbi and spiritual leader of the Kurdish Jewish community. In 1936, he called for his people to return to the Promised Land, moved to Eretz Israel, and settled in the Kurdish neighborhood in the heart of Jerusalem. He served as rabbi and mohel of the community until his death. His humility, scholarship, devotion to his people, and love for Israel embodied the spirit of Judaism.
From Kurdistan to Jerusalem, his life reflected the sacred chain that Shavuot represents: the passing of faith, wisdom, and Jewish tradition from one generation to the next.
He raised five children, and through the generations his legacy continued to flourish. Among his offspring are leaders in public service, law, and the preservation of Kurdish Jewish heritage in Israel, continuing the values he carried throughout his life.
May his memory continue to bless our family and all who remember him. Am Yisrael Chai.

היום אנו חוגגים את חג השבועות, חג מתן תורה, הרגע שבו עם מוכה עמד יחד בהר סיני והפך לעם המאוחד בברית ובאמונה. נעשה ונשמע
היום אני זוכרת את סבי, הרב חכם שלום שמעוני זצ״ל (1884–1977), שיום השנה לפטירתו חל בשבוע שעבר, כ״ו באייר. הוא נולד בדוהוק שבכורדיסטן, והתייתם בגיל צעיר. הוא היה הרב הראשי והמנהיג הרוחני של הקהילה היהודית הכורדית. בשנת 1936 קרא לקהילתו לשוב לארץ ישראל. הם עלו ארצה והתיישבו בשכונה הכורדית בלב ירושלים. הוא שימש כרב וכמוהל הקהילה עד יום מותו. ענוותנותו, למדנותו, מסירותו לעמו ואהבתו לישראל גילמו את רוח היהדות
מכורדיסטן ועד ירושלים, חייו שיקפו את השרשרת שחג השבועות מסמל: האמונה, החכמה והמסורת היהודית הנמשכת מדור לדור
הוא גידל חמישה ילדים, ומורשתו המשיכה לפרוח. בין צאצאיו היו אנשי ציבור, משפט ושימור מורשת יהדות כורדיסטן בישראל, שהמשיכו את הערכים שנשא עמו כל חייו
